Fairies are a way to reconnect children with nature by focusing on those little places in the environment: a rotting tree stump carpeted with moss and lichen, a rock outcrop, the base of a tree trunk. Knot holes, burrows, mushrooms, ferns, and moss-covered rocks all become a backdrop for creative play. Becoming fairy-sighted is to see the wonder and magic of nature. The acorn shell becomes a fairy's cap or cup; the whirly-bird maple seed, a fairy dress hanger. Taking a closer look at nature through this imagined fairy world gives children an opportunity to see the real world as a magical place to treasure and respect.
